Free things to do in New York

If you’ve read some of my older posts you will know I am currently planning a trip around the states, part of which will be spent in New York City.  When looking at everything I wanted to do it added up to quite a bit and the trip is already costing me a lot so I needed to save somewhere, and New York was where the biggest spending was going to happen.  Looking at lots of reviews and tips from other travellers I collected a list of free things to do and the times you can get into places free.
I will update this after my trip to the Big Apple in June if needs be, so as promised here is a list of free things to do and places to see in New York City:

  • Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, is free on a Tuesday, 10-12 noon on a Saturday and during winter season (Nov-Feb)
  • The Highline, offer free walking tours in the warmer months every Tuesday at 6:30pm and Saturday at 10am
  • Central Park
  • Fifth Avenue, take a wonder down one of the major streets in Manhattan
  • Times Square
  • Grand Central Station
  • MoMA, have free Fridays where entry is free for all from 4pm until 8pm
  • New York Botanical Gardens, basic grounds admission is free every Wednesday and from 9am -10am every Saturday
  • Washington Square
  • Battery Park, gives you some great views
  • Little Italy, take a wonder through
  • New York Harbor
  • Flat Iron Building
  • The West Village
  • Free tours by foot, http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/
  • Governors Island, the ferry across is free along with access to the island
  • Green-Wood Cemetery
  • New York public library
  • Public Boathouse Kayaking, go kayaking for free in New York harbour! http://www.downtownboathouse.org/
  • Socrates Sculpture Park
  • Staten Island Ferry
  • You can also go and look at all the other great buildings and monuments in New York for free but some you wont be able to go into for free, that’s why I haven’t listed some of the most popular and main ones.

These are just some things I came across during my research, I’m sure there are plenty more too!  Leave a comment if you wish to add anything, happy trip planning!
